Tony Pua is one among the few Bolehland politicians the rakyat respect. But if it is true that he has suggested replacing feeder buses with Grab, then he seems out of touch with the common men.
It is true that Grab is able to send passengers right up to their homes. But it is not cheap. The minimum fare is 5 ringgit.
What is the rationale for passengers paying say 3 ringgit by LRT or MRT to get to work and having to fork out more for the last kilometer home?
With Uber absorbed and out of the way and no viable competitor to talk of, Grab hardly offers free or 2 ringgit rides anymore. Unless, of course, Grab values its CSR and offers a flat fare of 1.50-2 ringgit for the last kilometer home.
The excuse that it would cost the government more to provide feeder buses really shouldn't be talked about. The feeder buses can impose a nominal fare.
If the government is facing financial and fiscal constrains, they should be looking at other means to cut costs.
An efficient, affordable and reliable public transport system is a necessity, a sine qua non.
Period.
