It's Not Oxford, It's Umno?!

The Oxford online dictionary defines an independent person, among other attributes, as "capable of thinking or acting for himself, not influenced by others; impartial.."

Note the word "impartial" among the attributes.

Following complaints of police brutality towards Bersih 3.0 participants, the Najib administration has agreed to establish an independent panel to investigate the matter. Najib has chosen former IGP Tun Haniff Omar as the panel's chairman.

Now, Hanif Omar had apparently said that he believed that communist sympathisers were also involved in the Bersih 3.0 rally and also had apparently agreed with Najib that the rally on 28 April was an attempt to overthrow the government.

Despite that, Najib, who helms Umno as its president, nevertheless saw no contradiction in his appointment of Hanif as the head of the independent panel.

Of course, the opposition and others, including Bersih 3.0, civil society and the Bar Council did, and are no happy about Hanif's appointment.

Even Suhakam, Malaysia's Human Rights Commission, thought so too.

So, who defines who, what is an independent person?

Who has the better definition?

Oxford or Umno?
