When the Pakatan coalition was in opposition, it was dead set against any attempt to muzzle the news and social media.
Now that it is the government, it wants to do just that that by requiring news sites and portals to self-regulate themselves and moderate readers' comments.
That kind of behaviour is so petty. The opposition wants the freedom to speak up and the governments wants to control that. So kiasu and undemocratic to boot.
Pakatan should show more guts than that and not disappoint the people who had voted for what they thought would be the dawn of a brave new Bolehland after some 60 long donkey years of suppression.
There should not be any form of control of the social and news media.
What the Pakatan government should do is crack down on the increasingly naked and incendiary racial and religious baitings by the opposition to gain political support. This is what will undo the nation, not what Gobind says on decorum. But has Pakatan done what it should have done instead?
If any one feels insulted or slandered by any news or comments, he can always sue in defamation.
Requiring news and social media to self-regulate is one step to telling people to watch out and not speak too much. However you want to frame it, it is a not too subtle attempt to curtail freedom of speech notwithstanding Gobind's demurrer.
