The man is not someone many people will agree with on many things, but on this Mahathir is right - that our constitutional rulers should not be engaged in business or be involved in state administration.
This is a thorny and sensitive subject that none of our so called leaders dares to touch on - certainly we don't and can't expect Pm Najib, who is better known for his kangkung and one Ringgit chicken than guts, to do so.
And the reason why it is better and right that our rulers do not engage in business or state administration is not that they might be cheated by unscrupulous businessmen (who dares to anyway with unpleasant consequences to follow), but because they are likely in all cases to be favoured in any public projects because of their standing as rulers.
But more importantly, because their engagement in business and especially in state administration is likely to get in the way of their constitutional role to stay above politics as rulers.
And as a consequence, be seen as not neutral with all that that connotes to their subjects.

Kluang RailCoffee
The Kluang railway station coffee shop, now re-branded Kluang RailCoffee, is well known for its cuppa of coffee and the charcaol grilled piping hot buns oozing with butter and kaya...It used to attract standing-room only crowds. It still does, but the last time I was there it wasn't a good experience for me. The famous coffee had somewhat lost its oomph and even the buns...The shop has a long and noted history being first opened for business in 1938 and the place is now run by the 3rd generation LIm family. I hope the next time I return, the coffee would regain its oomph. Click to read more...
