It is funny that the man who was supposed to have retired a long time ago, still has so much sway that when he squawks the prime minister seems to run around like a headless chicken, not knowing where to head to or what to do.
Najib. it seems, has not, if ever, contradicted the great man let alone stood up to Mahathir.
It is hard however, to expect Najib to behave like a rooster rather than a timid hen or chicken, having long been an integrated and integral part and parcel of the enervated system bequeathed to the nation courtesy of the great man himself.
A system that has become so corroded, corroding and corrupt? that an ex cabinet minister (who wasn't quite certain at some time whether her husband dealt with cow or condos or both), challenged her colleagues and accusers to show that they were clean or to forever keep their mouths shut.
At least Najib's predecessor, Badawi, the man who had been known as "Mr Clean" and whom some quite unkindly say slept through his tenure, had the guts to thumb his nose up at the great man himself.
At least Badawi was able to tell the great man no more of your megalomaniac penchant for grandiose mega projects, by putting the same in cold storage, wisely letting the great man's dream of a crooked bridge to nowhere get lost in Oxford.
Badawi's failure was that he unwisely did not capitalise on the overwhelming mandate he had received from the rakyat to push through much needed reforms that he had promised and the people had expected.
Otherwise, he would still have been around and the great man himself would have rightly been put in his place to let Malaysians get on with their lives without the dubious benefit of the latter's, some say, often asinine sappy soniferous sound bites.
If only Najib could be half of what Badawi had been in the beginning of the latter's term.
But when you yourself is weighed down with less than desirable baggage of your own, it is hard to even move without being the target of insinuations and sniggers.
In this circumstance, all that you could hope for is that no one stabs your back when you are not looking.
So sad, so sad.
