Right! Mariam, we have lost it!
What does merdeka mean to us today?
A nation more divided than during Tengku's time right up to Hussein Onn's.
Beginning Mahathir's time as the longest serving Malaysian prime minister, we, as a nation, are moving more and more apart from each other.
The emphasis given to ketuanan (supremacy) of race, Islamic conservatism and self-serving politicians have put paid to the hope of a united nation.
The accompanying growing discrimination has only worsened the situation, causing the flight of talents to other countries.
Mediocrity reigns, hobbling progress.
Maybe that's what true merdeka means.
Ai ya ya!
