Wow! Saudi Arabia is now making the learning of Mandarin a mandatory second language?!
Here in Bolehland, we are still thinking along racial lines for a country of diverse races, religions and cultures.
Whether one likes it or not, Mandarin is catching on as a language that more and more countries around the world are paying attention to as China rises, not only as an economic juggernaut that will soon overtake the US as the world largest economy, but also as a growing geo-political force to reckon with.
But unlike the US, China has no imperialist ambitions as its history has shown.
China has always been more interested in trade than subjugating countries or colonising them unlike what the western powers have infamously done.
Should we not also give attention to making Mandarin an important language to learn and master even as Malay is the official language of the country that attention be paid to for sure.
