Rooting, Custom Roms And Smart Phones

Many of us are happy just to have a smart phone.

We rush to install apps to show off to our friends, with nary a bother for the permissions we are giving away just to have the apps.

Some of the permissions asked for are scary, and some are downright dubious and unnecessary.

Many are often obscure in their intent and meaning.

Still, we don't care.

We must have all the cool apps.

I do not want to talk about permissions here.

I want to talk about rooting and flashing custom roms.

Rooting is a process to gain root control of the device, much like having admin or superuser right in the case of our computers and laptops.

Rooting a smart phone is not without its own risks. If not done right or properly, it can turn your smart phone into a useless, expensive brick.

Rooting also often invalidates your phone warranty.

So, you have to decide for yourself whether you want to take the risk of attempting to root your phone.

Apps Galore

But once you have root or superuser access to your smart phone, you can do things with your device that you otherwise won't be able to - like doing away with all the carrier bloatware whose use may cost you some.

There are some really useful apps that require root access for them to be installed which you can't do without first rooting your phone.

Or flashing (installing) customs roms to replace the stock rom that your phone came with and that you find boring and/or lacking in some 'cool' features that you want.

Roms are like the entirety of your device's operating system, including the apps.

There are many custom roms out there that you could try, like CyanogenMod or Miui ('me you i')

Well, to cut the story short, I managed to root my HTC Desire S gingerbread phone after some attempts.

Was it scary? Well, a little, because you never knew how it would turn out.

NOTE: I have created an app for my blog with the help of an online app creator
