Goodbye Tanjong Pagar!

30th June 2011 was a historic day for the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station in Singapore. It was the last day for train operations there.

In fact, the last train out of the station was driven by the Sultan of Johore.

The station will always hold fond memories for me. When I was living in Kluang, my friends and I would often hop on a train to Singapore. Sometimes we would take the early morning train and arrive at the Tanjong Pagar Station still bleary-eyed.

Once, we even slept at the station when we could not afford hotel fees!  Ah, the things we would do when young.

The Murals Inside

The station used to house a station hotel. We did put up a night there and it was creepy. The room was humongous with very high ceiling and it was spooky.

The station had several eateries. There was one stall that sold mean packets of nasi lemak that we would frequent every time we were in Singapore.

The station was built in 1932 and had been in operation for 79 years.

Goodbye Tanjong Pagar, I will always remember you fondly.
